Ye Old Hobnails Inn

The Hobnails Inn - one of Britain's oldest pubs.

One theory about the origins of our name is that it referred to the Hobnail boots worn by the farm workers. Up until 1474 it was the Manor House, lived in by Roger Washbourne. From 1743 - 1993 (250 years) it was in the same family, the Fletchers. Local people including myself will remember it being famous for their vast range of baps and glorious homemade desserts.

If walls could talk I'm sure they would have some secrets to tell. Legend has it that there is a friendly ghost or two that wander the floors. including "Harry" a small boy ghost who just likes to play pranks, and I feel sure that we have experienced a few of his visits!

In the oldest part of the pub there is an extract from a newspaper cutting by Ralph Fletcher, stating that "the two essentials for running a successful Inn are good health and a good partner". You won't see much of my good partner, David, as he spends the majority of his time in the kitchen using his skills, along with his team, to prepare home cooked food to a highest of standards, using only the best quality ingredients and local produce where he can.

The other essential ingredient is good staff, which we are lucky enough to have so we can offer a warm and friendly service to all our customers.
